Clinical teaching ward–round

Clinical teaching ward–round, which trains students how to observe in clinical practice, diagnosis and treatment of patients, is an effective way to cultivate the students' clinical thinking ability. Through teaching rounds, the students gradually master the basic rules of clinical work, such as: history taking and inductive analysis, physical examination and the patient's communication skills, the evolution of the disease and the laboratory results analysis, reasonable doctor's advice and the right progress note.

Over the years, the Teaching Department of Internal Medicine has been encouraging the teaching ward-rounds in English, and holding English teaching ward–rounds on a regular basis while young physicians observing. Young physicians can master the rules and skills of English rounds through demonstration of the teaching rounds, and improve their English level. Demonstration teaching rounds are attended and scored by the teaching office, the teaching supervision group of experts, the director of the department, the secretary in charge of teaching, students and resident physicians. This activity is done in rotation with the tertiary disciplines, which is chaired by the attending physicians. And various departments in the organization of work ensure that students and teachers can carry out this work timely.

The international students, who enter clinical practice, have limitations on the language. The first challenge for them is the problem of communication with patients. The measures we have taken are assigning clinical teachers, who have strong English communication skills to guide students’ clinical practice, explain the problems in clinical rounds. At the same time, every international student has a seven-year intern for "one-to-one mutual aid" as the partner in practice, available at anytime to communicate. On one hand, international students can make a better understanding of patients and the doctors’ analysis of the diseases, which is helpful for their studies and clinical practice; on the other hand, by the enhancement of communication with their Chinese intern partners, they can find and solve more clinical problems. This will result in mutual promotion and common progress. The above practice method is better than the individual practice mode.
