The First Clinical College of Tianjin Medical University (General Hospital) was founded in 1946, which was previously named as the Central Army General Hospital, which was also one of the five central hospitals. In 1951 after the establishment of Tianjin Medical University, the hospital became Tianjin Medical University Affiliated Hospital. A group of well-known academic leaders and teachers have been trained.

The famous physician, Professor Xianyi Zhu was nominated for the first president of Tianjin Medical University and the first dean of clinical internal medicine department. He was a famous scholar who was also known as the father of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and made a significant contribution to the development of endocrinology. The second director of the Department was Professor Chengda Zhang, a famous expert of gastroenterology; 1956 Professor Cang Guo was appointed as the department director and was known for his first domestic pulmonology monographs. Professor Wenbin Du who has been commissioned by Premier Zhou over "the National Seventh Five-year-plan" program, standardizing respiratory medicine among the developed countries, was appointed as the First Deputy Director and Director of Clinical College of Tianjin Medical University.

The Internal Medicine Department of General Hospital has a history of 60 years. It composes of seven tertiary professional disciplines (8 sections), all giving the MD and PhD. This discipline consists of many talented personnel who carry independent interdisciplinary development and mutual cooperation, and the doctors who have become highly educated are now the academic leaders. The total number of beds is 566, and the patient resource is quite rich with many diseases, providing good teaching developing prospects.

After decades of teaching practice, internal medicine has gradually formed its own form and content, and established three key parts of the basic theory, teaching and practice.

Before 1990’s teaching in Chinese and use of chalk and blackboard was the main form. After 1990’s slide projectors and other teaching methods joined in. And in the twentieth century, some teachers use advanced technology such as multimedia which increase the perception of students to mobilize interest in learning, thus enhancing the effectiveness of teaching. The original seven-year theory classes gradually grew into bilingual teaching.

In early 1990s, the reform of teaching concluding a series of teaching activities began, which had changed the traditional methods of teaching. Clinical teaching emphasizes students ’ ability of analyzing and solving problems, combined with clinical cases, real issues, and inspiring discussions. PBL classes have started from the active observation of clinical manifestations to find clinical problems and combine them with the learning issues to master clinical knowledge step-by-step. Writing internship logs, improving problem analysis and solving skills, improving students' enthusiasm to upgrade students' ability to use knowledge have helped to improve the teaching – learning system. Experiences of the doctors’ and carrying for the patients with various mental conditions have set up a good example for the students. Thus, the students are trained to utilize theoretical knowledge, analyze and solve problems efficiently.

Lectures and teaching ward-rounds are a supplement to the basic course by expanding students' view, improving their comprehensive analysis of disease diagnosis and treatment capacity, and further stimulating students’ interest in learning.

The Teaching Department of Internal Medicine undertook the course of Internal Medicine and diagnostics in English for the foreign students’ internship since 2000. After more than ten years of exploration and continuous improvement, a mature English teaching system has been established.

In 2001, Internal Medicine was honored as the Outstanding Course of Tianjin Medical University. In 2003, it was again awarded as the Tianjin Medical University Outstanding Course at the university level. In 2009 Hematology was named as the Outstanding Course of International College of Tianjin Medical University (in English media). In 2011 Internal Medicine was honored as the Outstanding Course of International College of Tianjin Medical University (in English media), and in 2011 was honored the Outstanding Teaching Team of Tianjin Medical University.
