Introduction

      Internal Medicine for international students is the core of clinical medicine, the most important part of clinical medicine education for international students. Theres a team who is quite qualified for full English teaching in the Teaching Department of Internal Medicine, after more than 10 years of explorations and efforts.

The First Clinical College of Tianjin Medical University began to assume the clinical professional training mission since the establishment of the Tianjin Medical University. And in 1980 it became China's second founder of the eight-year institutions, following the Peking Union Medical College, training eight batches of eight-year graduates. It undertook clinical medicine seven-year students' training since 1988. English teaching and training of bilingual teaching experience and teacher reserves for long-term system in clinical medicine education has laid a solid foundation for the cultivation of the International College students.

The Teaching Department of Internal Medicine who undertook diagnostics and Internal Medicine teaching in English, clinical practice and internship, completing the syllabus in English for International College, has established a mature English teaching system and achieved good teaching results after more than 10 years of exploration and continuous improvements. It has produced 3 doctoral degrees, 7 master degrees and 10 graduate students currently. 
    Internal Medicine is a secondary discipline having the authority to deliver doctor degree, which is composed of seven tertiary disciplines: the Respiratory, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Hematology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Infection and Immunity. Cardiology, Endocrinology and Gastroenterology were approved as Master Spots in 1981, among them Cardiology and Endocrinology were also approved as Doctor Spots. All these seven tertiary disciplines were granted as Doctor and Master Spots. Gastroenterology, Respiratory were named as national key disciplines; Endocrinology as municipal key discipline; Hematology and Cardiology as university key disciplines; Infection and Immunity, Nephropathy as hospital-level key disciplines. The Internal
 Medicine department consists of 566 beds, among them 533 beds are for clinical practice, which makes the average number of beds for internship 7.1.Currently there are 148 teachers, including 73 senior titles, 50 intermediate grades and 25 junior titles. There are 95 percent who got master degrees or above, which is 57 doctorates and 83 master degrees. The department has10 doctoral tutors and 24 master instructors. There are 34 teachers in the English teaching group for foreign students, including 14 professors, 14 associate professors and 6 medium-grade professionals. 17 of them have abroad experience, 11 have English full-time training experience. 33 teachers have degrees of master or above, which accounts 97% of them, including 26 doctor degrees accounting for 76% and 21% master degrees.

The construction of teaching materials is one of the cornerstones of the foreign students education. The Internal Medicine teaching group has organized the International College teachers and experts to write an English Internal Medicine textbook according to the students’ syllabus and curricula, and it has been revised to the second edition. The group is now preparing to hire experts from other universities to participate in the writing of the third edition, and is trying to get in contact with a well-known domestic publishing house.

The teachers have published five teaching research papers in recent years, and have finished 10 tasks in the past five years. They have published 507 research papers, which included 90 SCI articles. Teachers have participated in 130 research projects in the past five years.

The teaching department of Internal Medicine has several classrooms and a large medical simulation center of 1750 square meters (relying on the Teaching Office), including physical examination training rooms, puncture skills training rooms (consisting of consolidated puncture training models, multimedia heart and lung auscultation, abdominal palpation simulation system, computer simulation case assessment system). All tertiary disciplines have their own demonstration rooms. Clinical teaching activities of this course have enough teaching capacity and demonstrations of clinical cases, medical equipment and teaching facilities, which could fully meet the requirements of clinical practice for foreign students.

Foreign students in China to study clinical medicine must pay attention to English, not only to participate in the examination of medical practitioners, but also for future practice and academic learning. In the International College all the courses are carried out in English.

Our university has always been increasing the investment on the faculty of foreign students. Some high level English teachers have been selected as the backbone of the teaching group. The university and the hospital send young teachers to famous domestic and foreign universities for learning and training to improve their English and business levels. At the same time, various types of English teacher training programs have been held. And teachers are encouraged to use their spare time in learning. The above measures have improved their English proficiency significantly.

The study on University Hospital Teaching Management System was awarded outstanding achievement award of Tianjin Medical University in 2004.

In 2001, Internal Medicine was honored as the Outstanding Course of Tianjin Medical University. In 2003 was honored as the Tianjin Medical University Outstanding Course at university level. In 2011 it was honored as the International Outstanding Course of Tianjin Medical University, and in 2011 was honored the Outstanding Teaching Team of Tianjin Medical University.
