Internal Medicine for international students is a core and comprehensive subject of medical education. It is not only the basis for the other medical disciplines, but also has close associations with them. Learning Internal Medicine well is the key to learn clinical medicine better. It’s a huge challenge for the Teaching Department of Internal Medicine. With 60 years of experience in teaching this subject in Chinese, it’s not easy for the teaching group to prepare the theory and practice in English. At the same time it is a great opportunity for the teachers to cultivate their international standards and global vision. After more than ten years of constant exploration and development, we have set up a mature teaching system in English and have obtained great results in teaching aspects.

The Teaching Department of Internal Medicine in the first clinical college of Tianjin Medical University has participated in the training of eight-year students in clinical medicine since 1980 following the Peking Union Medical College. Since 1988 we began to cultivate the seven-year students. We have good teachers and long-term teaching experience bilingually, which lays a solid foundation to cultivate the international students. Learning Internal Medicine should be based on basic medicine and diagnostics. In order to improve the ability of solving clinical problems, we should pay attention to integrating the theory with practice, discovering and analyzing the problems. Our aim is to enable the medical students to master the branches of Internal Medicine, the correct clinical thinking ability, basic theory and knowledge of Internal Medicine, the diagnosis and treatment of the common and frequently-occurring diseases, the initial processing methods of the acute and severe diseases, the basic clinical operative skills, to make the students learn new developments in Internal Medicine, and to master the changes of medical modes.

Internal Medicine courses include the diseases of respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, urinary system, blood system, endocrine system, connective tissue disease, rheumatoid disease, infectious disease and disease caused by physical and chemical factors. We will arrange the progress chart and teaching time according to the syllabus and teaching program.

The Teaching Department of Internal Medicine has made great improvements with the help of the medical university, the leaders of our hospital and the teaching office. In order to adapt to the rapid development of this discipline , the teachers has reformed a lot in the teaching environment, teaching contents, teaching methods, teaching approaches and teaching evaluation according to the actual situation.

We always attach great importance to the cultivation of talents, constantly improve the teaching condition, perfect teaching management system, reform and innovate a lot in the teaching contents, teaching methods, teaching approaches and teaching modes.

After decades of teaching practice, Internal Medicine has gradually formed its own teaching form and contents, and has established three teaching stages: basic theory, intern and practice.

The idea of reforming the teaching of the Teaching Department of Internal Medicine has always been in adhere to improve medical students’ clinical skills, strengthen their clinical knowledge, improve clinical quality, pay attention to the cultivation of clinical thinking ability, train students’ ability to find and solve problems and develop self–studying ability. In this way we have changed the traditional teaching mode of passive learning, mechanical memory and achieved the purpose of cultivating students’ ways of thinking.

Our teaching is based on cultivating students’ innovation spirit and practical ability, improving the high quality innovation talents, teaching students’ to learn and learning to think and live, and at the same time make sure students have initial clinical ability, life-long learning ability and good professional quality.

Curriculum reform has a clear goal, a responsible and feasible plan and proper measures. It has gained obvious effects through the feedback from the students and our summaries in time. In terms of the teaching contents, we increase academic frontiers contents in time and broaden students’ knowledge. In terms of teaching methods, we carry out small case discussions actively and encourage students to make presentations to stimulate students’ to learn actively to grasp knowledge.

Starting from the overall thought of creating high-quality curriculum, we have established the effective measures to practice and improve with two key points---reforming of clinical teaching methods and training students’ clinical thinking ability.

The class and clinical education gives priority to heuristic teaching, arouse students’ enthusiasm, increases the class discussions and questions, pay attention to the cultivation of the ability, guide the students to the correct methods of study and realize interactive education model instead of spoon-feeding education.

Internal Medicine was honored the good course of Tianjin Medical University in 2001, excellent course of Tianjin Medical University in 2003, and excellent course of International academy  in Tianjin Medical University in 2011.
